OMFSurgery is one of the recognized specialities of dentistry in the US

The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery OMFSurgeons as "The experts in face, mouth and oral surgery"

The scope of the field is pretty extensive, and it covers:

Dento Alveolar, wisdom teeth, implants

Facial reconstruction post Trauma
Bone regeneration/Reconstruction
Facial cosmetic surgery

And much more..

For more info on this exciting field, please visit www,AAOMS.org

Lets fast forward to dental school, and lets also assume you have decided to pursue this wonderful specialty

One of the basic requirements to apply is to have a DDS or a DMD from an ADA accredited dental school

-Some programs also restrict seats to US citizens/Permanent residents only
-There are 2 tracks the 4 yr OMFS certificate or the 6 yr combined OMFS/MD program
-In most programs you have to pay tuition for the duration of the Med school
-While on OMFS service you do get paid a stipend
-There are some programs that sponsor Visa's for international candidates, but those are harder to get into

Regarding the application process, please refer to my earlier post

Gearing up For Specialization in the USA

In general it is pretty hard to specialize in the USA if you are an international candidate, but it varies a lot with the field you wanna specialize in

I'd say:

OMFS, Ortho, Pedo are the hardest to get in (Good programs more so than the bad ones for obvious reasons)

In general:

#1 Grades, grades and grades (GRE for Ortho, NBME for OMFS)!!
#2 Externships (Mostly for OMFS)
#3 Letters of recommendations
#4 Research
#5 Extra curriculars/Social service/Societies etc etc....

I know its a pretty general overview, but feel free to post if you have any pacific questions!

Prep for NBDE Part 1 and 2

Overview of preparing for MCQ based examinations

By the grace of God, I have had the wonderful opportunity to participate in many multiple choice based tests (MCQ) at different stages of life. Thus I strongly feel the basic principles remain the same whether its the NBDE or DAT or MCAT for that matter. Today, lets focus on the NBDE:

-Know your subjects as best as you can (means working hard through dental school)
-Past questions (This is the most important advice I feel anyone can give you)
-Practice as much as possible (Remember, with so much material, its easy to forget stuff, to keep doing those questions over and over again)

NBDE Part I

Time Frame
-3-4 weeks full time studying
-4-6 weeks with school

Materials

In order of importance, from most important to least important:

-Released NBDE Papers (MOST IMPORTANT)
-First Aid to NBDE Part1
-Your text books
-Kaplan notes/videos

Basically doing the old exams and the first aid is good enough, and use your text books as study materials. Kaplan is optional...

NBDA Part II

Time frame
-2.5-3 weeks full time
-3-4 weeks if studying with school (I know people have done it in shorter durations but this is the average estimate)

Materials
-Old ASDA Q's (released papers)-MOST IMPORTANT
-Mosby's review
-First Aid
-Kaplan Notes (Not really necessary)
-If you did DDS from the US, try to revise stuff from your school notes
-Even if you are an international candidate, following the above rules should help you Pass the test comfortably

Again, please do post comments if you find this information helpful..also, if you have any questions feel free to post them too.
Thanks!

INFORMATION FOR INTERNATIONALLY TRAINED DENTISTS

Hi Guys,
If you are an internationally trained dentist who aspires to train in the USA, you have come to the right place. I was once in your shoes and know its really challenging to find the correct information around the web.

A little about me:

I did my BDS from India, and then my DDS from New York, and I am currently doing my OMFS residency (6 yr).

So please do let me know if you have any questions regarding anything from applying for DDS to post graduation in the USA. I will be more than happy to help you in your quest!

Always remember: An idea that at first does not seem haphazard, actually has no hope at all! Albert Eisnstein

Keep dreaming and working hard to make them true!

I will keep posting more information as often as I can, so please do keep checking! and would love to have your comments and feedback.

Thanks!
